How to Survive Major Remodeling

major remodeling

Surviving through a remodel whether its a kitchen, a bathroom, or the whole house is tough. I’m sure many of you can attest to this fact and we will be the first to join you in raising both hands. With that in mind we are starting a series that will hopefully help you handle your experience with a little more grace and knowledge than we had coming into ours.

We started this whole house remodel by putting in an entire new ceiling throughout the whole house. Let me emphasize that doing this is not for the faint of heart. It was brutal and took forever because we only had one able bodied person (I was pregnant and sick most of the time) available at the time and he worked full time outside of the house.

Any kind of drywall work is extremely dusty and ceilings are the absolute worst. Add that to a crammed full of boxes house and a pregnant nesting first time momma and we had quite the experience.

While we are not finished with the whole house we have finished large chunks and more importantly have finally gotten control of the chaos….on most days. This is saying a lot because functioning in spaces that are completely ripped up is exhausting.

We hope that some of our experiences can give you some tips and ideas

Living Room Recap

7550976018_370e2ac4ec

The last number of months you as I am sure you all are aware of by now, we have been pretty much 100% been focused on the kitchen and the garden. Other than occasional bouts of fixing toilets, hatching duck eggs, making old window hanging organizers and about a million other things of course.

But lo and behold their are other rooms in our house that need work (HA!). The living room is one of them.

And I realized in surprise the other day that most of you don’t even know what it looks like because I haven’t posted any pictures of it.

*Whack!* That is me kicking myself in the rear to get the house photo tour and outline up for y’all. Soon, I promise. Don’t leave because I’m a slacker please. I’m a loveable distracted person not a slacker really truly. And I did do a sweet giveaway for you guys soooo hug me :)

In fact the last few weeks that you haven’t heard as much from me, I have brainstormed 2 different businesses, researched running a food truck in our little po-dunk town, started an online petition, chased a now almost walking 9 1/2 month old, and started a new workout program. From here out though my promise to you guys is no more doing cool stuff and not telling you. Deal? Deal….imagine me shaking

Kitchen Love

OB-Kitchen2

I know we already gave you a quick run down over here about some of the kitchen sprucing we have been doing but I really wanted to bring it all back into focus for you guys (and mostly myself) of where we currently are and where we are going.

1. Paint colors: Top half of the walls: Mesa Tan (it looks way oranger than this in some light) Trim/Belly Band: Java (love this color!) Bottom Paneling and Cabinets: Casa Blanca All are from Sherwin Williams- although we have since switched to Behr products and so the interior of the cabinets will be painted in Behr matched to Sherwin’s color

2. Vinyl Self Stick Floor Tiles: Cryntel Tiles from Lowes: at .25 a square foot you can’t beat that!

3. Ikea Pragel Countertops in Walnut: We thought it would look super cheesy from the photo above but it looks awesome in person. A less expensive, way less maintenance option to butcher block!

4. Ginger Mini Brick Mosaic: Got these for on clearance for $1.23 a sq foot! If you love them regardless of the price they came out with a slightly thicker version this year here.

5. Ikea Lack Shelves: For between the window and stove….something like this:

Thanks

Kitchen Sprucing

vinyl

We are in full on “sprucing” mode.

Kevin doesn’t like calling what we are doing “remodeling”….he says it feels too dramatic and permanent. So we call it sprucing.

The kitchen is getting close. So close to being done.

Granted nobody else can see that except me because it doesn’t look anywhere near to being close. Right now it looks like its been ripped apart and that we are hillbillies.

But almost all the parts are in place for this spiffiness to ensue. WordPress doesn’t think spiffiness is a word. Well…it is. So there.

Here’s some peeks at what is going in the house:

Flooring:

Isn’t it pretty?!?

I never thought I could be so excited about peel and stick vinyl floor tiles. But this girl is stoked for a floor let me tell you.

And the price is pretty stinking awesome. 25 cents a square foot. Um yes please.

Dishwasher:

That might not look like much but that beauty right there cost me a pretty $25 off Craigslist. For the momma who has had no dishwasher in well over a year this = Total Score.

Convincing husband that installing dishwasher is a good okay super awesomely sweet thing to do for his wifey= God….and Doug Peck (thanks Doug!)
