The Essential James Beard Cookbook Review and Giveaway

I think it was probably during my short stint at culinary school that I first heard about James Beard. Comments here and there thrown in about this culinary master. At first I just smiled and nodded pretending I had some idea who these people were talking about. It was a while later when I acquired my first Julia Child cookbook, Mastering The Art of French Cooking that I really began to understand who this legend was.

Maybe you’re young like me or at least young in the food world and are clueless who he is. To wrap up his life in a microscopic manner would be to say that he, “laid the groundwork for the food revolution that has put America at the forefront of global gastronomy. He was a pioneer foodie, host of the first food program on the fledgling medium of television in 1946, the first to suspect that classic American culinary traditions might cohere into a national cuisine, and an early champion of local products and markets. Beard nurtured a generation of American chefs and cookbook authors who have changed the way we eat.” -Quote from James Beard Foundation

He was  the first true celebrity chef of America and a prime mentor for all those who followed in his footsteps.

While he passed away before I was

Fierce Women Review and Giveaway

Fierce-Women

fiercewomen

A few weeks ago I received a surprise email from Moody Publishers asking me if I would like to take some time to read through their newest book in the True Woman line, Fierce Women. First off I was absolutely delighted to hear from them since Moody is one of the most respected Christian publishers and colleges, but I didn’t know what to think right off the bat with the title of the book. Nevertheless the notes they sent on it sounded intriguing and soon a copy had arrived on my doorstep.

Last week I sat down and read half of it and was to be quite honest, overwhelmed with what I found in its pages. When I finished it this week, I was a mess. To back up a little the topic of this book is not (as I assumed and as Kevin asked when he saw the title), “a women’s lib book” and is quite honestly the exact opposite. It is a call to women to take back their rightful places as their husband’s helper and to really experience the beauty of a marriage that works. I absolutely loved this book and I know you will too.

Many of you probably don’t know that one of the primary reasons Kevin and I came to the For My Life conference and later moved across the country was because our marriage was in shambles. We have spent the last two

Soaps Up Dude Review and Giveaway

mochafrappachino

I am so excited to introduce you to my friend Melissa’s new company, Soaps Up Dude! We met Melissa and Dave on our move over from the East Coast…right here to be exact:

tentphoto

That’s right….at a campground! We were the only two couples crazy enough to be caught outdoors camping at the end of November in New Mexico. We bonded instantly over their tent heater and both lingered several days instead of a single night to hang out longer. Between cheap food, banana peppers and crackers and the Blackberry liquor we made before the trip we had a great time.

We even took a trip down to see Carlsbad Caverns together which was life changing:

They had been planning on moving to the west coast so we were basically flip flopping coasts as a couple which was hilarious. They ended up back in Florida though and just a wee bit after us were joined by their first baby too!

This is Link. He’s just a bit of a ham. I can’t wait to get my hands on those sweet cheeks!!

So via the great world of Facebook we have kept up with each other. Just a short time ago Melissa started posting these amazing pictures of her soaps and

Born Again Dirt Review and Giveaway

bornagaindirt

I don’t exactly remember where I first saw a link to Noah Sanders book Born-Again Dirt: Farming to the Glory of God, maybe Amazon or maybe a fellow gardening blog. But I was absolutely caught by the title and knew it was a must read.

Can I be honest? I also loved the fact that the authors name is Noah! Writing an email….Dear Noah….felt strange and cool all at the same time (for those of you who are new here our almost 1 year old son’s name is Noah.)

Turns out that I was right, Noah’s book is a gem and I highly recommend it to you.

The idea of farming to the glory of God is something that Kevin and I have actually spent a significant amount of time discussing and reading about already. With all the background study we have done I did wonder if there was much else that could be added to it, if we would disagree on points or if it would be completely different from what our talks had been about.

I am happy to say that it was a great mix of all of the above. I would say about 90% of the book is a very well written description of how we feel about the current farming community, what being a godly farmer is, and how to actually farm that way, and 10% are things we hadn’t considered and that we are still
