Several weeks ago I was asked to join the review team for Dr. Harvey Karp’s new book “The Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep“. With an 18 month old and one to be arriving here in just a few short weeks I jumped on the opportunity to read another sleep book. I am happy to report that it was an enjoyable read and one that I will be recommending in reference to this topic.
Some of you may know that we were greatly helped by and advocates of the controversial Baby Wise book by Gary Ezzo and Dr. Robert Bucknam. It really is a shame that so many people have gotten so worked up over that book because, taken with a grain of salt and applying it with discretion, it has helped many families including ours. It is easy though to get pulled into the CIO vs tear free method debate and so from this point on it will be my recommendation that people read both the Baby Wise book and The Happiest Baby Guide to Great Sleep as a pair.
Specific Points
In this book I was pleased to see that Dr. Karp takes a broad view of “make it work for your child” and offers plenty of options to new parents of things to try. I found his suggestions for flexible scheduling to be particularly in line with how we feel, although I thought a little more

Pursuing Justice: The Call to Live and Die For Bigger Things By Ken Wytsma
Late last Saturday evening (or at least what feels late to the parents of a one and a half year old man-child with another due to arrive in June) our phone rang with a startling insistence. It was our next door neighbor, and she was asking for help. She had given what extra resources she had to a young destitute girl in town and had committed herself to helping the girl stay fed and housed until she could be taken somewhere to get the specialized care she needed. Now our neighbor was imploring us to help out by asking our church it they had a benevolence fund they would be willing to give from to aid her in continuing to help the poor young girl.
My wife and I looked at each other a little surprised. Not from the nature of the request so much as the timing of it. A few years back we had been blessed to regularly serve at a local men’s shelter in our hometown, Bend, Oregon. We had become involved there, carried along on the motivating sails of a series of Sunday morning lessons about giving your life away. I think later that phrase was the official title of yet another series, but this was earlier, when Antioch was small, and met in

A few weeks ago I received a surprise email from Moody Publishers asking me if I would like to take some time to read through their newest book in the True Woman line, Fierce Women. First off I was absolutely delighted to hear from them since Moody is one of the most respected Christian publishers and colleges, but I didn’t know what to think right off the bat with the title of the book. Nevertheless the notes they sent on it sounded intriguing and soon a copy had arrived on my doorstep.
Last week I sat down and read half of it and was to be quite honest, overwhelmed with what I found in its pages. When I finished it this week, I was a mess. To back up a little the topic of this book is not (as I assumed and as Kevin asked when he saw the title), “a women’s lib book” and is quite honestly the exact opposite. It is a call to women to take back their rightful places as their husband’s helper and to really experience the beauty of a marriage that works. I absolutely loved this book and I know you will too.
Many of you probably don’t know that one of the primary reasons Kevin and I came to the For My Life conference and later moved across the country was because our marriage was in shambles. We have spent the last two

You may have noticed a newcomer to the blog. This one little word that seems could sum up a million things posted as a header title. You may have clicked on this little word. You may have been sorely disappointed to find out that it took you to a very sad little broken page that didn’t have anything in it. But always remember when you dig around on this little hobby site of mine…..99.9% of the time, there is a purpose. But between diapers and dishes and ducks screaming their heads off at 5 a.m. in the morning, this thing takes time.
Love. Welcome to our newest section of the blog.
It’s a crazy, beautiful, confusing thing.
Within this gigantically impossible to cover all the aspects word we will talk. Mostly we will talk about the Lord. Because lets be honest, you can’t really embody love if you haven’t received any. Sometimes we will talk about relationships too AKA how to not kill each other. Eventually if we are feeling up to it we might even take your questions…..as long as it is inherently understood that we are imperfect messed up people trying to figure this thing out too.
If you are looking for Kev on the blog….he’s most likely to show up here. He’s a busy dude these days (and super grateful to be so!) but he loves the Word and loves our talks about these topics more than any others. He
